How to turn on a Samsung TV without the remote

Updated · By

Press the control button on the TV itself, usually under the middle of the bottom edge behind the Samsung logo, or on the back near a lower corner. Once the TV is on, a phone app on the same Wi-Fi can be your remote, and it can turn the TV on next time if Power On with Mobile is enabled.

1. Use the control button on the TV

Most Samsung TVs have a single control button, sometimes called the TV Controller. Look under the middle of the bottom edge, behind the logo, or on the back near a lower corner. A short press turns the TV on. On many models, a short press while the TV is on opens a small menu for source, volume and power off, and a long press selects.

2. Use your phone

Your phone can turn the TV on only if the TV keeps its network connection in standby. Enable Settings → General → Network → Expert Settings → Power On with Mobile while the TV is on. After that, SmartThings and other remote apps on the same Wi-Fi can wake it.

Zapmio turns your Android phone into a Samsung remote over Wi-Fi, with large buttons for arrows, OK, volume and channels. It finds the TV on your network and only needs you to tap Allow on the TV once. Try it free on your own TV.

3. Use Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)

Samsung calls HDMI-CEC Anynet+. With it enabled (Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)), turning on a game console, streaming box or soundbar connected by HDMI also turns the TV on.

4. If nothing works

  1. Check that the TV has power: the red standby light should glow when the TV is off.
  2. Unplug the TV for 30 seconds, plug it in again and press the control button.
  3. If the button is broken and the TV is not on Wi-Fi, an infrared universal remote or a replacement Samsung remote is the only option.
