Universal remote app or universal TV remote?
If your TV is a smart TV on Wi-Fi, a phone app is usually the easiest universal remote, because it works without extra hardware and without an infrared blaster. For an older TV without a network connection, a cheap infrared universal remote is the right choice. Infrared remote apps only work on the few phones that still have an IR blaster.

Three kinds of universal remote
| Type | Works with | Needs | Downsides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infrared universal remote (hardware) | Almost any TV with an IR receiver, including old TVs | Batteries, code setup, line of sight | Another remote to lose; setup codes can be fiddly |
| Infrared remote app | Any IR TV | A phone with an IR blaster (some Xiaomi and Redmi models) | Most phones, including iPhone, Pixel and current Galaxy, have no IR blaster |
| Wi-Fi remote app | Smart TVs on the same network | Phone and TV on the same Wi-Fi | Does not work with TVs that are not connected |
Which one fits your TV
- Smart TV on Wi-Fi (Google TV, Android TV, Samsung, LG): use a Wi-Fi remote app.
- Roku TV or Fire TV: use the free Roku or Fire TV app.
- Older TV without network: buy an infrared universal remote, or use an IR app if your phone has an IR blaster.

Every big TV platform has a free official app: Google TV, SmartThings for Samsung, LG ThinQ, Roku and Fire TV. They work well, but each covers one brand, and the remote is often one feature inside a larger app. A dedicated remote app opens straight to the buttons and can cover several brands and several phones in the household.

Frequently asked questions
Does my phone have an IR blaster?
Probably not. iPhones, Google Pixels and current Samsung Galaxy phones have none. Some Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco phones still do; look for an IR emitter on the top edge.
Is there a free universal remote app?
The official apps from Google, Samsung, LG, Roku and Amazon are free for their own TVs. Zapmio is free to try on your own TV.
Will a universal remote app work with any TV?
No app works with every TV. Wi-Fi apps need a smart TV on your network, and each supports specific systems. Check the compatibility list before you rely on one.
